With his state in a lawless and atheistic shambles, the Duke of Vienna turns over the clean-up job to the cold-hearted Angelo and disguises himself as a friar to spy on the proceedings. Taking swift and merciless action, Angelo sentences Claudio to immediate execution and, after a passionate appeal from the condemned man’s pious sister, Isabella, finds himself to be even more lecherous than those he has judged. The Duke witnesses all of this and, in such close proximity to secular death, goes on a torrential path of scheming, condemnation, and subsequent redemption, acting as his own deus ex machina and finding ultimate power in the heavy hand of mortality.
